Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
What does Defrost do on the Proctor Silex 22660/22661?
It is a user-selected setting, not automatic sensing. The booklet says to start the cycle and press Defrost for frozen foods made for a toaster; frozen items may need another cycle, and frozen prepared meals or nonbread foods are not supported by that instruction.
Explore this need in the finder →Are the 22660 and 22661 suitable for a bagel routine?
The exact pages list a Bagel button, and the shared guide says to press it after the cycle starts to add toasting time for bagels, English muffins, or buns. The sources do not state a maximum bagel size or a one-sided heat pattern, so check the actual food against the openings.
Explore this need in the finder →How much counter width and depth should be checked for the 22660/22661?
Both exact pages list a 6.7-inch outside width and 10.4-inch outside depth. Those shell measurements do not include required clearance, outlet reach, room to load food, or access to the crumb tray at the back.
Explore this need in the finder →The Proctor Silex 22660 is a compact, two-slice plastic toaster with a manual shade dial, dedicated Bagel and Defrost buttons, and a high-lift lever for smaller pieces. The related 22661 is the red-finish version of the same documented layout. This is a source-based assessment of those exact U.S. model numbers, not a hands-on test: the manufacturer lists their shared functions and dimensions, while the linked booklet names both models together. Neither the “wide-slot” label nor the product photographs establish a maximum slice size.
One shared layout, two exact finishes
The white 22660 and red 22661 are separately listed model numbers, not a color selection inferred from a suffix. Each U.S. product page gives the same set of controls and the same 10.4-inch-deep, 6.7-inch-wide, 7-inch-high outside body. The manufacturer’s 840374400 Use & Care booklet explicitly covers both codes and assigns them the same T148, 120 V, 60 Hz, 700 W electrical rating. The records support a shared functional assessment while keeping the color and exact model code visible. Check the appliance label and finish against the offer; do not rely on a generic “2-slice” title alone.
There are two conventional openings, each for one slice, with one shared manual shade selector rather than independently adjusted pairs. The manufacturer calls the openings wide and describes bread guides that hold food centered. That is useful layout information, but it is not a measured slot width, depth, maximum slice length, or proof that a particular bagel fits. If you routinely toast unusually long or thick bread, compare a real sample with the openings and check the specific seller’s return terms.
Bagel and frozen settings require a button press
The selector has seven numbered shades, from 1 (lightest) through 7 (darkest), according to the booklet. For a frozen food made for a toaster, the manual says to press Defrost after the cycle has started; it allows extra time for thawing and heating, and notes that frozen items may need another cycle. This is a user-selected defrost operation, not automatic frozen-food detection. The manual also excludes frozen prepared meals and foods that are not bread.
Bagel is separate from Defrost. The booklet directs the user to press Bagel after starting the cycle to add toasting time for bagels, English muffins, or buns; it does not document a one-sided heat pattern or a maximum bagel size. Toast Boost raises smaller foods for easier retrieval. The ordinary bread lifter starts the cycle and can raise food, while bread pops up automatically when the cycle finishes. No dedicated in-cycle Lift & Look, added-time control, Reheat, Keep Warm, timer-only setting, or frozen-food sensing is documented for these models.
Small body, but check the counter and food separately
At 6.7 inches wide and 10.4 inches deep, the published shell dimensions make the pair worth considering where a conventional two-slot footprint matters. Treat them as body measurements, not working-clearance instructions. Leave the space the manual requires around the appliance, keep it away from flammable items, and do not run it inside an appliance garage or other enclosure. Also allow room for the cord and for reaching the slide-out crumb tray at the back. A tight shelf that fits the casing may still make normal use or cleaning awkward.
Neither model page nor the shared manual publishes a numeric opening measurement or a maximum bread-size range. “Wide” is a qualitative description, not a compatibility guarantee for thick bagels, artisan loaves, waffles, or toaster pastries. The guide cautions against oversized food and metal utensils, and says toaster pastries belong in a toaster oven; if one is placed in the toaster despite that warning, the lowest shade setting and close supervision are specified. Do not treat Toast Boost as permission to reach into a hot or plugged-in slot.
Cleaning, warranty, and offer checks
The removable tray slides out from the back. For daily use, the manual says to clean it daily; unplug first, let the toaster cool, and do not turn the appliance upside down to shake out crumbs. Jammed food should be addressed only after disconnecting and cooling the toaster, using a nonmetal utensil as directed. Automatic shutoff at the end of the cycle is documented, but the booklet still says not to operate it unattended.
The two U.S. product pages state a three-year limited warranty, and the linked booklet gives written terms for products purchased and used in the United States and Canada. A particular used or old-stock unit may not qualify, so confirm the actual offer, included booklet, seller, warranty eligibility, condition, returns, plug and rating label before purchase. The manufacturer’s archived 2008 toaster-recall notice names a different set of model numbers and says only certain series codes of those listed models were included; it is not a unit-specific clearance for these or any used toaster. Ask the manufacturer to check the bottom label if recall status is material to your decision.
