A useful fit for

A document-based candidate when two slices per cycle, a dedicated Defrost button, Bagel mode and mid-cycle viewing matter; check the actual bread against the unreported maximum food size.

The main tradeoff

This two-slot model has one shared browning control, not independent pair settings. Its listed outside body is 11.4 inches wide by 6.6 deep, and the manual calls for an open location with at least 200 mm clearance from overhanging cabinets or walls and no appliance-garage/under-cabinet use.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

How many slices does the Design Series 26555 toast in one cycle?

The exact US page identifies Code 26555 as a two-slice toaster. Its two conventional openings are a two-slice configuration, not a four-slice model or a long-slot layout. The listed slot height does not establish a maximum loaf length, so compare your own bread size with the opening and manual.

Does Code 26555 have a frozen-bread setting and bagel mode?

Yes: its controls include a separate Defrost button and a Bagel/Bun button. Both are user-selected modes, so the existence of Defrost does not mean the toaster detects frozen food on its own. For bagels, the manual says to orient the cut faces toward the outside elements; it does not promise a particular result for every food.

Can toast be inspected before the cycle ends?

Dualit's Peek & Pop procedure lets the user raise and lower the bread during a cycle without interrupting it. If you take the bread out early rather than returning it to the slot, the manual directs you to cancel and unplug the appliance. This is a manual inspection control, not a shade sensor.

Will any wide artisan loaf fit?

The page describes 36 mm slots and lists a 1.3-inch opening width by 5.5-inch height, but it gives no maximum bread dimensions. Check the loaf's cross-section and length against the exact toaster and instructions; don't treat 'wide slot' as a guarantee.

This document-based assessment covers the U.S. Dualit Design Series 2 Slice Toaster, Code 26555, in the black-body and stainless-steel-panel finish listed on the manufacturer page. I compared the exact product listing, its linked U.S. Design Series instructions, the manufacturer’s U.S. collection entry and the page-linked model image. This is not a hands-on review: I have not tested, owned or measured the toaster, and the sources make no independent case for how evenly it browns any particular bread.

Two slots and one shared browning control

The product page identifies a two-slice capacity, which is the useful starting point if you normally toast one or two pieces at once. The photo and instructions show two separate slots rather than a single long opening. That matters if you are comparing it with a long-slot toaster: the manufacturer does not call this a long-slot arrangement, and the page provides no maximum loaf length or maximum food thickness. Its “wide slot” description should not be treated as a promise that a homemade loaf, thick bagel or unusually tall slice will clear the guides. Check the actual bread cross-section and the exact manual before buying. Dualit lists the openings as 1.3 inches wide by 5.5 inches high, while its product description also uses a 36 mm slot-width figure. Those published expressions are close but not identical after conversion and rounding. Neither is a complete usable-food-size specification. Ask the seller for the exact Code 26555 and compare the opening with the food you use; do not infer a fit from the marketing term or a staged photo. One browning control serves this two-slot toaster. The manufacturer lists eight browning levels, a dedicated Defrost control, a Bagel/Bun control and the Peek & Pop feature. This is a narrower control arrangement than the four-slot Design Series 46555, which has two separate control stations for its left and right slot pairs. Neither capacity choice guarantees a preferred shade: bread moisture, thickness, starting temperature and placement are not controlled by a product specification.

Defrost, Bagel and an in-cycle check

The manual describes Defrost as a control the user presses after lowering frozen bread. It is not automatic frozen-food detection. For a bagel, the instruction is to cut it in half, point both cut faces toward the outside elements and select Bagel after engaging the lever. That orientation is worth checking against your routine, especially if you usually toast only one half or a different shaped item. Dualit’s directions describe a mode; they do not establish a result for every bagel or bread recipe. Peek & Pop is the most distinctive practical feature in the two-slice layout. The instructions allow the user to raise the bread during a cycle and return it without interrupting the timer, so it is a manual inspection step rather than a shade sensor. If you actually remove toast before the cycle is complete, the manual says to cancel and unplug. The lever also offers extra lift after toasting for easier retrieval, but the documentation does not state a maximum food size or prove that every small item is easy to remove. The page says Perfect Toast Technology adjusts the cycle using toaster and surrounding temperature information. I treat that as a manufacturer description, not an independently measured browning system. It should not be confused with a control that detects toast color and ends the cycle at a chosen shade.

Counter space and the manual’s operating limits

The stated outside body dimensions are 11.4 inches wide by 6.6 inches deep by 8.2 inches high, with a listed weight of 4.4 pounds. These figures can help with a first counter sketch, but they exclude the space needed to reach the lever, clear the cord, remove crumbs and follow the operating instructions. The manual requires an open, level placement at least 200 mm from overhanging cupboards or walls. It says not to store or use the toaster in an appliance garage or under cupboards. A tight cabinet position is therefore a poor fit regardless of the body measurements. Dualit’s instructions also say to keep the crumb tray in place while toasting, use the appliance under supervision and unplug it when it is not in use. They caution against pastry and food with coatings or fillings that may drip. Those restrictions are more useful for deciding where and how it can be used than a general claim that it suits every breakfast food. Keep the full manual with the specific unit and follow it for cleaning, jam removal and setup. The manufacturer lists 1.2 kW, the body dimensions, weight and eight browning levels. I did not find exact voltage, frequency, cord length, maximum food size or a separate wattage label in the documents reviewed. Dualit’s page describes a one-year domestic guarantee for appliances bought directly from the company and excludes carriage; do not extend that language to a different seller or a used toaster without checking the offered terms.

Who should compare it

Code 26555 is a paper-fit candidate if two slices, two conventional slots, a dedicated Frozen button, a bagel setting and the option to lift and inspect mid-cycle match your priorities. Compare it with the four-slot Design Series 46555 if four pieces or separate left/right pair settings matter more. If your priority is a longer loaf, independently adjusted color stops, automatic frozen handling or a verified specific bread fit, the available product page does not establish those claims for 26555. Check the exact code, finish, supplied instructions, seller terms and your counter clearance before choosing.
