A useful fit for

A research-based fit to investigate when four slices per cycle and sensor-selected shade stopping matter more than a long-slot layout, and a 12.48-inch-deep body plus the manual's clearances fit the counter.

The main tradeoff

The exact slot-opening size is unpublished, the manual requires a one-slice load in a sensor-marked opening, dedicated Frozen control is absent, independent pair settings are not textually established, and Breville's page and manual disagree on wattage.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

How many slices can the BTA870 toast in one cycle, and is it a long-slot design?

Breville calls the US BTA870 a four-slice model, and the US manual illustration shows four separate extra-wide openings. The sources do not give a maximum slice length or opening width and do not present it as a long-slot toaster, so check the bread you actually use rather than treating the capacity label as a size guarantee.

Can it handle frozen bread without a dedicated Frozen button?

The manual says to use the ordinary sensor-mode steps for frozen bread because the shade sensor detects its color change. That is automatic sensor handling, not a dedicated Frozen control; if the separate button is essential, this model is not established as a match.

Which side of a bagel should face out in the specialty-bread mode?

The BTA870 manual says the side needing more browning faces outward, toward the outer elements, in Bagel / Crumpet / English Muffin mode. Do not borrow the opposite direction from the BTA820XL instructions.

Does it offer both automatic shade stopping and time-based toasting?

Yes. Eye Q mode uses the color sensor to stop at a selected shade; Timer mode disables that sensor and runs for a set time. Sourdough is a separate sensor-mode option, while A Bit More adds time after a cycle. The manual describes controls, not independently tested toast outcomes.

What should I verify about counter space and power?

The US page lists a 7.52 × 12.48 × 12.99-inch body and 1,200 W, while the US manual rates BTA870 at 1,800 W on 120 V / 60 Hz. Because the wattage conflicts, check the rating label on the exact toaster. The manual also calls for four inches of side clearance and eight inches above; outside body dimensions alone are not a counter-fit calculation.

The Eye Q 870 is Breville’s four-slice version of its color-sensing toaster family. That makes it a different proposition from a four-slice conventional dial model: the bread lowers automatically, sensors watch for a selected surface shade, and the timer mode is a separate time-based option. Those functions are described by Breville; this is a source-based assessment, not a hands-on toast test.

Two documented finishes, with six other suffixes still open

The current US page identifies two exact offers: BTA870BSS1BNA1 in Brushed Stainless Steel and BTA870NLE1BNA1 in Noir Launch Edition. The linked manual covers the shared BTA870 family, and the page provides an exact image for each finish. No functional difference is stated, so this review covers only those two offers.

Six other observed suffixes—PMR, SST, ALM, DBL, OLT and BTR—returned the same parent page without matching offer records. They remain unresolved, not assumed obsolete or interchangeable. Check the complete suffix before applying this review to another offer.

Four slices means four separate slots, not a long-slot layout

Breville calls the BTA870 four-slice, and its manual shows four separate extra-wide openings—not one long slot. Capacity does not guarantee a particular loaf fits: no maximum slice length or opening width is published. For a single slice, use one of the two sensor-marked positions in the four-slice diagram; without bread in front of a sensor, the toaster raises the carriage and returns to ready mode.

Color is the sensor’s stop condition, not a performance guarantee

In default Eye Q mode, optical sensors monitor color and stop at the selected shade. Breville says they scan ten times per second; its page lists seven shade choices, and the manual describes motorized lowering and raising. These are specifications, not independent tests of browning evenness, cycle time or sensor accuracy.

Sourdough mode uses a modified algorithm intended to stop earlier and reduce burnt crusts. Timer mode disables the color sensor and runs for a set time, which Breville describes for waffles or pastries that need time-based heating or do not visibly change color. For toaster pastries, the manual specifies the lowest shade setting and says to stay attentive.

Special-bread directions are specific

The US manual gives it a Bagel / Crumpet / English Muffin control that heats the outer elements more; the side needing extra browning faces outward. Do not borrow the BTA820XL’s opposite bagel direction. “A Bit More” adds time after a completed cycle. These are documented controls, not tested results.

The official front image shows two mirrored control clusters, and the manual marks two sensor positions, but its text does not confirm whether the slot pairs can use different settings. If independent pair controls are essential, verify this from the exact unit or seller; the finder does not count it as established.

Counter fit and the published power conflict need checking

Breville publishes dimensions of 7.52 × 12.48 × 12.99 inches (W × D × H) and a 9.48-pound weight. The manual requires four inches of surrounding-side space and eight inches above, and rules out small-appliance enclosures. Body size excludes those clearances, loading room, outlet access and crumb-tray access.

The power figures conflict: the US page lists 1,200 W, while the linked US manual rates BTA870 at 1,800 W on 120 V / 60 Hz. Wattage remains unresolved; check the exact unit’s rating label and booklet before assessing circuit suitability. Do not substitute the two-slice BTA850’s 1,200-watt rating.

Cleaning is straightforward but depends on access

The manual identifies a ceramic-coated top cap, crumb-guiding cavity and removable tray on the left side. Unplug and cool the toaster before cleaning, empty crumbs often, and click the tray firmly into place; a mis-seated tray can prevent operation. Do not put the tray or toaster in a dishwasher. Leave room on the left for removal.

Who should investigate it—and who should keep comparing

Investigate it when four slices, color-based stopping, frozen-bread sensing without a Frozen button, or Timer and specialty-bread modes suit your routine. Its 7.52-inch width may help on a narrow counter, but check the 12.48-inch depth, clearance and wattage label. It is not a long-slot model. The available evidence does not establish a dedicated Frozen control, independent pair settings or measured opening size.

The US page lists a two-year limited warranty; verify the seller, package and applicable terms. A limited CPSC search surfaced no BTA870 notice, not a complete recall determination or safety certification. No independent browning, noise, cycle-time, durability or electrical measurements are represented.
